Learn to Paper Piece (Sat Jul 18/26)

Would you like to learn Paper Piecing basics? Come learn how to make this lovely snail block by  Violet Craft. You will learn how to make a few sub-blocks and then join them together to make a full block. Although each sub-block is different, you will apply the same techniques each time, which sets you up for success on any future project you make. If this block is your jam, you may also love the larger quilt that it comes from - "The Forest Abstractions". This snail block finishes at 8.5" x 8.5" - the perfect size for a small wall hanging or a block for your next hoodie. Free patterns are available online (with sign up of Violet Craft newsletter) Choose the snail or one of the other free blocks for class (butterfly, flower, pinecone or heart).

You will need to create a profile for the free block. The free patterns are found under the "From the Studio" tab, then under "Free Gifts"

FABRIC AND SUPPLY REQUIREMENTS
*Basic Sewing Kit (see below for suggested kit items)
*Print your pattern on foundation paper and bring it with you to class (call ahead if you do not have access to a printer). You can also print on regular printing paper as this is a small block.
Background - one fat quarter
6 fabrics for the snail - 6 fat quarters may the easiest for sizing (leftover fabric can be used for the back and binding)

PAPER PIECING SUPPLIES
Add a 1/4" ruler - 6in or 12in ruler
Glue stick
Plastic template sheet - you will need a 3" x 12" piece to use as you construct your blocks
Foundation Paper - to print your pattern on (can also use regular paper for this small project)

SUGGESTED SUPPLIES
Starch /Best Press
Jumbo Wonder Clips
Seam Roller  or Pressing Tool
Microtex Machine Needles - its slim point makes it excellent for precision piecing

Prep work prior to class
This free pattern is available online and can be found on Violet Crafts website. Please print the pattern and bring it with you.
We suggest printing on foundation printing paper (it's a bit thinner that regular paper). Carol Doak's foundation paper is what we use.

*WHAT IS IN A BASIC SEWING KIT:
For most of our classes we ask you to bring (along with your sewing machine) a 'basic sewing kit' which usually contains: rotary cutter and/or scissors, cutting mat, small snipping scissors, straight pins & a pin cushion or collector, seam ripper, a spool of neutral 50 wt cotton thread, extra bobbins, notebook & pen/pencil, tape measure/ruler(s), etc.

CLUB CANCELLATION POLICY:
We understand that life happens! Club fees are non-refundable. Should you miss a session and wish for "more time", feel free to join us on our free drop-in sew days, like Finishing Fridays. Please be aware that our availability may be limited during these drop-in sessions.
Around The Block reserves the right to cancel clubs for any reason. If this happens, you will be refunded your club fee in proportion to the year attended vs cancelled.
